After two days of hard fighting, three divisions of enemy soldiers have taken over a small town. They have been ordered to kill any civilians that they find. To avoid being caught, some of the townspeople, including Richard, have hidden in the cellar of a large house. Richard is holding a baby that begins to cry loudly as a group of soldiers approach. Richard covers the child’s mouth to block the sound of the cries. If he removes his hand, the crying baby will alert the soldiers to the fact that there are people hiding in the cellar, but if he keeps his hand over the baby’s mouth, he will smother it to death. What number of people, if any, would have to be in the cellar for it to be obligatory for Richard to keep his hand over the baby’s mouth?
Jesse is a doctor who is working closely with thirty-four different patients. A patient who was diagnosed as HIV positive forty days ago, and is about to be released from the hospital. Prior to leaving, this patient tells Jesse that he intends to infect as many people as possible when he is released. Since Jesse is bound by doctor-patient confidentiality, there is no legal way to stop this man from carrying out his plan. However, Jesse can contaminate his medication with an untraceable poison that will kill this person before he gets a chance to infect anyone else. What number of people, if any, would have to be saved for it to be obligatory for Jesse to contaminate the medication?
